My mom used to make us walk  the 2 miles home from school, rain or shine, winter or spring. I’d have to squint because the sun would be setting through the leafless trees just as school got out and they’d beam me straight in the eyes the whole walk home. This cover of Landslide came out when I was in 8th grade, and I remember walking home to it on my little Nokia’s very modern radio function, trying not to admit to myself that I might actually like a country music-sounding song. I love this song, so thanks to Stevie Nicks for writing it and to the Dixie Chicks for doing such a beautiful cover.

I’m back in New York for my first full winter in many years, and there’s something about the way the light hits my desk in the afternoons that brings me back to this song, those long cold walks and that ever-setting sun.
